“The Unity Campaign” is committed to saving our own community from its oppression of violence, and vacuum of hopelessness. Its mission is to repair broken families of violent crime, restore broken trust in city police, politicians, and dramatically reduce the staggering number of homicides in the City of Oakland each year. Ultimately, “The Unity Campaign” will become a viable, comprehensive, and primary resource for Crisis Response, Violence Prevention, and Community Building in the City of Oakland.
The campaign will unify city police, politicians, business owners, victims, and residents under one umbrella - rechanneling our collective energies towards celebrating life, instead of grieving constant loss.
The Unity Campaign will host events, and programs that occur annually, monthly, and on an ongoing basis. With this continuum of non-violent alternatives, and support, Loggins and Harris aim to create and cultivate an enduring, cellular culture of help, hope, and healing in Oakland—not just a fleeting “feel good” event whose impact is short-lived and superficial.
Proceeds from “The Unity Campaign” programs, events, film projects, and outreach will help to sustain critical agencies, entities, and movements in the Bay Area, who are committed to non-violent change and violent crime prevention.
Annual events that are currently scheduled include:
In a festival-like atmosphere, Oakland residents will unify to celebrate hope, healing, and non-violent change in their city. Food, fun, and family will be the order of the day. Proceeds will help to support local families who have been victimized by senseless, violent crime in the Bay Area.
Local teens will trade “beefs” for dance moves, as they “party with a purpose” in a safe, secure and entertaining venue. Guests will celebrate the lives and legacies of loved ones lost to gun violence, while also enjoying a mix of music from popular local artists and celebrity headliners.
Bay Area families shaken by violent crime will join with special guests to share in a powerfully and mutually supportive and healing experience. Guest celebrities, artists, entrepreneurs, motivational speakers, and other newsmakers will inspire audiences with their personal tales of triumph over tragedy. The purpose of this week-long event is to reclaim the faith, hope, and vitality of our fallen community.
It’s time to revive the drive-in movie! The Unity Campaign wants to present family-friendly films in the park, where the entire community can come together and enjoy some popcorn, a couple hotdogs and a good “flick” underneath the stars. Again, proceeds will support the continuing efforts of the Khadafy Washington Foundation for Non-Violence and other like-minded, violence-prevention organizations and movements.
The Bay Area is one of the most diverse regions in the country, and greater strides should be made to celebrate and experience our traditions and holidays as a cross-cultural community—not as a single ethnic group, race, heritage, or neighborhood. Such exchanges will facilitate understanding, tolerance, and peaceful fellowship. Whether we’re trimming trees at Christmas together, designing dragons and floats for Chinese New Year, or learning to salsa at a Cinco de Mayo parade, opportunities for positive, non-violent exchange and change are all around us.
The Unity Campaign is resolutely committed to saving ourselves—not just from violent crime but from other social cancers like poverty, homelessness, drug addiction, and a sky-high high school drop-out rate. At community dine-in’s, local restaurants, businesses, and other volunteers will donate food, money, space, or time to help feed the homeless throughout the City of Oakland. Before we can feed the soul and promote non-violent change in our community, we must first feed the body.
Teens in need of grief counseling, conflict resolution, and general support will have a safe site to visit whenever they're in need of help. Teens and adults will be properly trained to deal with troubled youth who struggle with making positive, healthy, and life-giving decisions in a world where violence appears to be the only option.
The Khadafy Washington Foundation for Non-Violence will expand its current services to train new team members who will report directly to violent, Bay Area crime scenes to assist those affected. Families in need of counseling, housing, clothing, food, medical care, or other immediate support will always find refuge and comfort in The Unity Campaign.
Seconds matter when troubled youth are on the brink. The right words, a comforting voice, and a trusted advisor on the other end of a phone line can make the difference between life and death. The Unity Campaign will be prepared to handle calls from teens who have more problems than answers, more rage than the ability to reason, and more guns than tools to cope. Calls will always be confidential and can also be anonymous to ensure open and honest communication.
